[ARCHIVED] City Seeks Volunteers for Variety of Boards and Commissions

Annually in July a portion of positions on various volunteer boards and commissions come available for reappointment.

These boards and commissions provide valuable feedback and recommendations to the Mayor and City Council.

There are also a number of positions on various boards including Planning & Zoning, Cemetery Board, and Storm Water Advisory that currently have open positions.

Residents of Storm Lake who are interested in serving their community through one of these various boards and/or commissions are encouraged to apply for appointment.

Three years ago the State of Iowa passed a law that requires all government boards and commissions to be gender balanced, membership that is made up of equal number of male members as female for even numbered boards and 50% plus 1 of either male or female members for odd numbered boards. That law goes into effect in 2012.

The City of Storm Lake encourages women and minorities to apply for positions on the City’s Boards and Commissions.

“The work of the various Boards and Commissions provide the Council and me with invaluable insight on specific issues in the City along with recommendation for Council to consider when making vital decisions that affect the City”, commented Mayor Kruse. “We are very grateful for the work performed by the great group of board and commission members.”

The City of Storm Lake has the following Boards and Commissions in which citizen volunteers can serve:
• Civil Service Commission
• Band Board
• Planning & Zoning Commission
• Board of Adjustment
• Cemetery Board (appointment is to a joint board with other agencies)
• Library Board
• Airport Commission
• ADA Commission
• Storm Water Advisory Board

Terms on each commission vary in length. All appointments are made by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council.

Citizens who have interest in serving on a board or commission can get an application online at or by contacting City Administration at 712-732-8000 or by email at
