Rental Inspection Program
The City of Storm Lake established a rental housing program in 1999 with the goal of providing safe, sanitary housing for the residents of Storm Lake by establishing minimum standards and ongoing inspections for all rental housing units in Storm Lake.
The regulations for this program are set out in the Storm Lake City Code, Chapter 5-8.
The Rental Housing Inspection Program is administered by the City of Storm Lake Building Official's office with direction from the City Manager.
Rental Program Update
The owner or the owner’s designated manager, who must be at least 18 years of age, shall inspect all required smoke detectors in his/her rental unit(s) between July 1 and July 31 and again between January 1 and January 31. The owner or the owner’s designated manager shall ensure that all such smoke detectors are installed and working properly in accordance with the City code.
A reminder will be sent in December for January inspections.
Registration of Rental Properties
All rental housing in the City of Storm Lake shall be registered on an annual basis. Annual registration shall be required so as to be able to provide and ensure that the City has the most current contact and ownership information. Annual registration bills will be sent to the property owner of the registered rental unit by July 15th and due by August 31st of each year.
Rental Registration Fees:
Base Registration Fee (Structure and 1 unit)- $10.00
Additional unit in excess of 1 (per unit)- $ 5.00
Registration of new and/or converted property or property which changes ownership shall be completed within 30 days of such activity.
