Functions
The Building Department ensures that new and remodel construction of residential and commercial buildings complies with the adopted building codes through plan review and on-site inspections. The department also ensures that residential rental properties comply with all safety and maintenance requirements.
Responsibilities
The Building Department is responsible for:
- Enforcement of Property Maintenance Code
- Enforcement of Rental Inspection Program
- Enforcement of Sidewalk Inspection Program
- Issuing Building, Electrical, and Plumbing Permits
- Performing inspections
- Reviewing plans prior to construction
Duties of the Building Official
The building official serves as the zoning administrator and the administration liaison to the Planning and Zoning Commission and the Board of Adjustment.
How do I apply for a building permit?
Building Permit applications are available at City Hall 620 Erie Street , or on our Building Permit Applications page.
How long will it take and when can I start construction?
Building Permit Review Process - Important Please Read
No construction is allowed until the permit is issued. Once the permit application and accompanying plans have been submitted, it will take approximately 5 business days to review residential applications and about 15 business days or more, depending on the project scope, to review commercial applications and to process the plans. Following approval of the plan and payment of fees, a permit will be issued.
