[ARCHIVED] STORM LAKE FIRE DEPARTMENT OFFERS SMOKE DETECTORS FOR SENIORS IN NEED

Sound the Alarm (3)

Those who qualify:

  • Age 55 and older.
  • Resident of Storm Lake
  • Do not have a working smoke detector.

“Fire safety is especially critical for our seniors,” Storm Lake Fire Chief Glenn Schlesser said. “Older persons are twice as likely to be killed or injured in a home fire situation. For those with limited mobility, it is vital that they are warned of a dangerous situation as quickly as possible.”

The smoke detectors being provided by the SLFD are lithium ion battery units, with a life of up to 10 years. The units are sealed with their power source included, and no battery replacement is ever required. The detector is simple to operate, activating automatically when it is attached to its mounting bracket.

Those who qualify may request a free smoke detector by calling 732-8010, or stopping at the Storm Lake Fire Department office, 820 Oneida Street.

The detectors are available on a first-come-first-served basis while supplies last. The department cannot perform installation.

The program is made possible by generous donations from community partners, including Marcus Lumber and Stille, Pierce & Pertzborn/Farmers Mutual Insurance. If donations allow, the SLFD would like to continue detector programs in future years.

The fire department would also like to remind residents that they can sign up for the free Community Connect program. The easy-to-use online platform allows participants to share information about their local household that can aid first responders and emergency response personnel when responding. Access the program at www.communityconnect.io/info/ia-stormlake.
