City plans Neighborhood Volunteer Program as alternative to abatement

Press Release Posted on February 03, 2026

The Storm Lake City Council has unanimously approved a concept for a new Neighborhood Volunteer Program.

In some cases, everyday property maintenance such as mowing lawns or shoveling walks can prove challenging for residents who are elderly, have a disability, or face other unforeseen circumstances that make it difficult to perform the required work.

The City's Building and Codes office proposed the program as an alternative to citations or abatement for homeowners who are struggling to comply with property regulations.

The program would provide a way for community members to volunteer to help out those in need on a case-by-case basis. However, the volunteerism is intended as one-time assistance and not an ongoing solution. The program would be used only in cases of absolute need.

Volunteers and homeowners must sign waivers for participation.

"I think it's a great idea... I like neighbors helping neighbors, so I think that wherever we can encourage it, that's great," Mayor Meg McKeon said.

Those interested in volunteering may contact Collette Baker at City Hall, 732-8002 or Baker@stormlake.org for more information, or may fill out a volunteer form online at https://stormlake.form.transform.civicplus.com/29870 (select Neighborhood Program Mowing or Shoveling Snow.)
