Council members and the mayor spoke in favor of a seven-person group. Maggie Martinez, who has already been a member of the planning process, was nominated as a city council representative on the new steering committee.
The council members will be recruiting other members, in hopes of having representation from local employers, education institutions and community organizations, for a committee that offers diverse backgrounds and leadership skills. Once initial appointments are made, the committee will function independently with no affiliation to the city government.
The committee may also choose to appoint additional persons to subcommittees to perform various tasks toward the child care goals.
Anyone who would like to be considered for the committee or possible subcommittees can access an application here:

The City has purchased an area of land that could potentially be used for a child care center, and earlier obtained a grant to underwrite a needs study that can be used to assist a development. Another goal is to encourage more licensed in home-care providers.
