Election Information

The Mayor and City Council members are elected to individual four-year terms on a staggered schedule. Regular city elections are held every two years in November. Those elected take office at the first regular City Council meeting in January, typically held on the first Monday of the month.

Individuals interested in running for office must pick up an Affidavit of Candidacy and a Nomination Petition form at City Hall during regular business hours (Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM), County Auditor’s Office (317 E. 5th Street), or on the Secretary of State’s Website: https://sos.iowa.gov/city-elections. Candidates must collect a minimum of 50 valid signatures on their petition form. Once completed, all forms should be returned to the City Clerk, who will verify that the paperwork is properly filled out and can notarize the Affidavit of Candidacy.

Nomination paperwork can only be submitted during the official filing period, which may vary depending on the election. Candidate names become public once the paperwork is submitted to the City Clerk or if the individual chooses to declare their candidacy when picking up the forms.
