Lake Trail
How the Lake Trail came to be!
Storm Lake's past civic leaders made a brilliant decision when they were able to line our east, west and northern shores with beautiful public parks!
In recent years, however, the surge in health-related biking and walking prompted citizen groups to seek better, safer recreation trails along the lake. The Highway 110 area near Starr Park and the Sunrise Park Road were seen as two areas where growing bike and pedestrian traffic were competing with cars and trucks, creating a hazard.
In 1988, a sub-committee of the Storm Lake Chamber of Commerce launched the major recreational pathways project today known as LakeTrail. In the summer of 1990, about 7,700 linear feet of new concrete pathway, most of it eight feet wide, was built to connect with existing park sidewalks and low-traffic streets.
The total cost of this project was $175,000, with $80,000 provided through a state REAP grant and the rest through local taxes and donations.
The City of Storm Lake has received two additional grants for the widening of existing sidewalks. The grant will allow the widening of the trail from Hudson Street west to Grand Avenue. This will be completed in the fall of 2001 or early spring of 2002. The second grant will allow the widening of the trail from Hudson Street east to the DNR Lake Patrol Building.
