The Storm Lake Fire Department was established in the late 1800's.  From 1924 through 1978, the Fire Department was located in the Storm Lake City Hall building at 620 Erie Street, which was also shared by the Police Department along with other City offices.  As the department grew, a new fire station was built at the present site at 820 Oneida Street.

The Storm Lake Fire Department currently consists of 28 volunteers, one full time Fire Chief, and one full time paid firefighter.  Training drills are held once every week.  The department takes advantage of fire schools that are made available through some community colleges as well as Iowa State University Fire Service Extension.

The department responds to an average of 120 calls per year in a fire district of approximately 93 square miles, which includes the City of Storm Lake and outlying areas.  In addition, the department responds to rescue calls to assist ambulance personnel by performing vehicle extrication (Jaws of Life).
