The City of Storm Lake enforces the following codes:  

Uniform Building Code

    National Electrical Code

    Uniform Plumbing Code

    Uniform Mechanical Code

    Uniform Housing Code

    Uniform Fire Code

Most of these codes have exceptions which are listed in the Storm Lake City Code.

Building Permits are needed for the following:

    Siding ($21.52 permit fee)

    Shingles ($21.52 permit fee)

    Fence ($21.52 permit fee)

    Additions to home

    Any new construction

    Utility sheds if larger than 120 square feet (12 x 10)

    Garages or additions to garages

    Decks, porches or enclosing a current deck or porch

    New windows if larger or smaller than previous or if new altogether

    Re-wire electric or a new electric service 

    New plumbing

The City of Storm Lake has implemented a sidewalk inspection program and  rental inspection program.

ATTENTION CONTRACTORS:  All construction contractors, including special trades contractors, MUST be Registered with the State of Iowa.  For information, contact the Division of Labor 800-562-4692.

Right-of-Way Closing - If it is necessary to close public right-of-ways such as sidewalks, streets, alleys, etc. for construction a permit to close such right-of-way must be obtained from City Hall.  This form needs to be filled out a week in advance (if possible).  The permit fee is $25.00.
