Little Lake Discovery Boardwalk

Welcome to the home page for the Storm Lake Little Lake Discovery Center Boardwalk. The boardwalk is an interpretive trail and boardwalk system into little Storm Lake, a hemi marsh located on the west side of Storm Lake (learn more about hemi marshes here).

The boardwalk includes a handicapped accessible trial over land to a handicapped accessible board walk that goes out into the Little Lake area for first hand viewing of the natural environment. At the junction of the boardwalk and the land based trail is a two story observation tower that visitors can climb to view the area from a different perspective. The observation tower is not handicapped accessible.

Coming soon in 2013 is a new viewing scope that will be installed at the top of the observation tower. The viewing scope project is a successful collaboration of the following groups:
  • Buena View Garden Club
  • City of Storm Lake
  • Buena Vista County Community Foundation
  • Lake Preservation Association

The Little Storm Lake Discovery Center Boardwalk is available and accessible 24 hours a day throughout the year; however, visitors should be aware that the area around the trail and boardwalk is a public wildlife preserve which is maintained and operated by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). The area is open to hunting during the designed hunting seasons set by the IDNR.

Visitors using the site during hunting seasons should take extra precautions to make sure that are visible to hunters including the wearing of bright orange clothing such as an orange vest.
